Welcome to the first “Curated,” Sweden With Love’s online art show. Every month, I’ll bring you an established or up-and-coming artist whose work makes us swoon, helps us understand the world better, connects us with our humanity, provides us with beauty or simply makes us smile.
This month, I’m so excited to feature Judy Parker, a San Francisco-based photographer with a formal education in Cultural Anthropology. Judy has worked professionally as a film and digital photographer since the late 90s. Lately, she’s been using her iPhone and Instagram to express herself. Subjects that trigger her “photo brain” include vintage cars, yardscapes, architecture, plants, animals and, of course, humans. Her documentary-style photographs often look as if they’re from a different time, allowing the viewer to interpret and react to her art in their own personal way.
Artist Statement: After many years in the photo world, Instagram has sparked my personal creativity like no other photography outlet. It has provided a tool for me to take photos, edit them and share them in mere minutes. Since digital photography took over years ago, my main issue is spending endless hours on the computer. If you shoot with a digital camera, or even with a film camera, it’s inevitable that you will be on the computer for hours, days…the rest of your life! Instagram has allowed me to share my quickly edited photos with anyone who has an interest and get immediate feedback. All from my phone. It’s like my photo brain exposed. My photos often reflect the mood I’m in at that moment…dark, cheery, structured, twisted, adventurous. It can be a daily rollercoaster. Being a photographer can be a pretty isolated way of life unless you make an effort to get out there. With Instagram, I’m interacting with other photographer friends daily. It’s a great adventure. The endless artistic stream appeals to my love of photography, art and my anthropological background…a perfect combination.
